Hong Qian is an American mathematician, biologist and scientist. He is a professor of applied mathematics and and an adjunct professor of bioengineering at the University of Washington.

Background

Qian was born on September 26, 1960 in Shanghai, China; the son of Min Qian and Jinyan Zhang.

Education

Qian received a Bachelor of Arts in astrophysics from Peking University in 1982. Seven years later he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in biochemistry and biophysics from Washington University in 1989.

Career

Qian began his career as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oregon in 1990. Two years later he took the same position at California Institute of Technology. Then in 1994 Hong became an adjunct assistant professor of biomathematics at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) School of Medicine.

Also he worked as an associate director of National Simulation Resource at the University of Washington from 1997 to 2003. The same years Hong was an associate professor of applied mathematics at that university. In 2005, he held the position of a visiting professor at the Center for Theoretical Biology at Peking University.

Since 2006 he has been a professor of applied mathematics and adjunct professor of bioengineering at the University of Washington. In addition, Qian served as a boeing endowed professor at the University of Washington from 2006 to 2008. In 2008, he worked as a visiting professor of the chemistry department at Ecole Normale Superieure and at School of Mathematical Sciences of Fudan University. In 2011, Qian was appointed a Tang Ao-Qing visiting professor at College of Mathematics of Jilin University.

Achievements

  • Qian is known for his research in stochastic analysis and statistical physics of living systems: stochastic dynamics, systems biology of cells, nonequilibirum processes, molecular biophysics and mathematical biology.

Membership

Qian was a fellow with the Program in Mathematics and Molecular Biology at the University of California from 1992 to 1994. He is a member of American Physical Society.
