Hosokawa was born in 1362. Son of Kazuuji, he at first called himself Motouji.
In 1348, he fought Masatsura Kusunoki of the South Dynasty camp at Shi jo Nawate as a follower of Moronao Kono. In 1353, when South Dynasty forces attacked Kyoto, the North Dynasty defenders could not hold the capital city and Ujikiyo defended Mt. Hiei near Kyoto, thereby making it possible for Shogun Yoshiakira to flee to Omi (Shiga Prefecture) together with ex-Emperor Gokogon. The ex-emperor then fled to Mino (Gifu Prefecture), carried on the back of Kiyouji. In 1359, he became chief secretary to Shogun Yoshiakira and fought in many battles with distinction. He began feuding with Takauji Sasaki about this time. When Shogun Yoshiakira suspected Kiyouji of some wrong doinK, Takauji leveled a false charge against him additionally. As the result, Kiyouji retired to his territory in Wakasa (Fukui Prefecture) and then surrendered to Emperor Gomurakami of the South Dynasty. Kiyouji and Masa- nori Kusunoki attempted to recover Kyoto for the South Dynasty and Shogun
Yoshiakira and ex-Emperor Gokogon fled to Omi. Later, however, Yoshiakira recovered power and Kiyouji had to flee to Kawachi (Osaka Prefecture). He fell back on Sniramine Castle but it was besieged by the forces oi foriyuki Hoso- kawa. Kiyouji was killed when the castle was taken.
