Hosokawa was born in 1459. Son of Masamoto Kujo, Court noble, he was adopted Dy Masamoto Hosokawa, the Prime Minister of the Ashikaga Shogunate.
Sumiyulci, who was raised in the family of a Court noble, was found to be unsuited to become the head of a powerful warrior family, Masamoto adopted Sumimoto of Awa Province (Tokushima Prefecture), as his heir. This brought about the division of the Hosokawa family into two feuding camps. The feud became more violent in 1507 when Masamoto was murdered by agents of Sumiyuki. The Ashikaga Shogunate officially made Sumiyuki his successor but no warrior would follow that decision. Sumiyuki killed himself when his forces were defeated by Sumimoto's on August 1,1507.
