(The intention of this book is to make available knowledge...)
The intention of this book is to make available knowledge of existing inventions and discoveries which may help disabled persons find something from which they can derive greater independence, efficiency, happiness, and comfort. The material found in this book is based on the findings of two study projects: 1) the Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation study, funded by a March of Dimes grant from the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, that sought to make accumulated information generally available, encompassing all self-help devices and gadgets to aid the handicapped that could be found by all means of research available at the time, and 2) a research project initiated in cooperation with the Disabled Homemakers' Research Fund, which was established by a number of the nation's leading public utility companies to learn more about the problems of the more than 10,000,000 handicapped women in our country and to devise techniques for solving these problems. Not all of the devices pictured and procedures recommended in this book are of equal importance or of equal value, nor is it to be inferred that any handicapped person would be wise to procure every item set forth as usable by someone with a disability similar to his/her own. The writers' goal is merely to be of value in helping others on the road to self-sufficiency and independence. From the Authors' Foreword
