Background

Ikkei Ukita was born in 1795 in Japan. Original personal name: Kimi-Nobu.

Education

Ikkei Ukita studied paintings under Totsugen Tanaka and then made efforts to revive the ancient Yamatoe style of paintings.

Career

Later when foreigner's wave began to spread Ikkei Ukita joined it by painting pictures dedicated to Amer­icans such as those showing American ships' sinking. During the Ansei-no-Tai­goku he fell foul of the Shogunate and was imprisoned (1858). Was released the following year but died of illness shortly afterward.
