After graduating from Sapporo Agricullural School (1881), proceeded to Johns Hopkins College, USA, for further studies (1884) and upon returning rejoined his alma mater as assistant professor and after a brief period was sent abroad again, this time to Germany for further studies.
Back home Inazo Nitobe once again rejoined his alma mater as professor (1891), and at the same time was nominated technical expert to the Governor-General of Hokkaido. He was in turn professor at Kyoto Umversity, president of 1st Higher School, professor at Tokyo University, vice-director of general affairs bureau of League of Nations (1920-1927), member of Academy, member of House of Peers.
Baptized a Christian, was a staunch advocate of international peace.
His wife, Mariko was an American national.
