Famed playwright Israel Horovitz has written more than 70 produced plays, which have been translated in more than 30 languages worldwide. Along the way, he has also written screenplays for film including Author! Author!, starring Al Pacino, as well as the award-winning Sunshine, James Dean, and The Strawberry Statement. At the age of 75, he directed an adaptation of his play My Old Lady, starring Kevin Kline, Maggie Smith, and Kristin Scott Thomas. Now he shares tips and techniques on adapting plays for the screen. The book includes the full script of both the play version and screenplay of My Old Lady, along with an in-depth analysis by Horovitz of the challenges of adapting the written language of a play to the visual language of the screen. He discusses what inspired him to consider adapting the play in the first place, and his diligent efforts to distill the spoken language of the play into the visual language of film. In discussing his adaptation process, Horovitz also reveals his brilliant insights into the creative process itself, as well as how to keep inspired during the course of a lengthy writing career.

(Drama Characters: 4 male, 3 female Interior Set This ...)
Drama Characters: 4 male, 3 female Interior Set This poignant drama about a dysfunctional Jewish family in Massachusetts is structured as a memory play. Roddy Stern recalls what it was like growing up in a family dominated by his paranoid and pathologically jealous father, a truck driver who lurked outside his house instead of working to catch his wife with other men. A long suffering and abused saint, Roddy's mother raised two children in this difficult environment. Roddy's complex father is portrayed as a loving man with a demon inside that he fights but cannot exorcize. He eventually loses all control and drives away the family he loves. "A play of real power and dimension... It stays with the mind and heart." N.Y. Post. "One of the most horrific but complex stage fathers in recent dramatic history." Chelsea Clinton News. "Characters spring to immediate life and built in humor helps propel both the characterizations and the plot." Variety.

(Line ~ One by one a group of unacquainted people come tog...)
Line ~ One by one a group of unacquainted people come together to form a line for some unnamed, upcoming event. The first to arrive is a burly, beer-drinking, sweat-shirted "middle American," then an alienated, voluble, Mozart-loving youth; a taciturn type who brings his own folding stool; and, finally, a shapely, promiscuous girl and her spineless, older husband. Gradually inexorably, the struggle for first place begins, and as they lie, cheat, wrestle and push to gain the lead spot an extraordinary panorama of human frailty is made explosively and hilariously real. As, in the end, are the deviousness, the competitiveness, and the pettiness of the small, wasting battles with which we litter our lives. Hailed as a masterpiece of the new theater in its successful Off-Broadway production (in tandem with Acrobats) this strikingly original and perceptive allegory brilliantly evokes the humor, pathos, mistrust and vulnerability of the human condition in the casual circumstance of a group of disparate people waiting in line for some unspecified event. Acrobats ~ Two acrobats go valiantly through the complexities of their routine, smiling toothily, bowing on cue, and, all the while, conducting a sotto voce but lacerating marital spat. He threatens to drop her, she vows to leave him - but then the lights come up, the final bows are taken, and, subtly but surely, we are aware that their mutual dependency is still stronger than the tensions which have been so wittily and amusingly exposed. A perfect curtain-raiser, this clever, whimsical playlet, which was presented Off-Broadway on a double bill with Line, depicts two "acrobats" engaged in a running marital feud while, at the same time, going through the intricacies of their routine.

Using a cast of three to play forty sharply-drawn characters, this bold work of penetrating intelligence is based on the fanciful, explosive idea that a German Chancellor might, as an act of redemption, invite six million Jews to Germany and promise them citizenship and jobs.
