Ivan Alekseevich graduated from the 1st Moscow City College (1875–1880), where he began to write poetry secretly from his father and stepmother, who did not approve of his interest in literature. He wanted to continue his studies but was forced to take the place of bushelman in his father’s workshop.
Due to illness Ivan Alekseevich left the craft of his family and became a professional writer. His first two poems were published in 1882 in the Saint Petersburg newspaper "Svet". From 1885 his works began to be published in the Moscow newspapers "Vestnik Evropy", "Russkoye Bogatstvo", "Russkaya Mysl''" and others.
In search of spiritually like-minded people, Ivan Alekseevic became close to the poet M.L. Leonov. Under the editorship of Belousov and with his participation under the pseudonym I. Bryantsev two collections of works by self-taught writers "Rodnyye zvuki" (1889-1891) were published. Later Ivan Alekseevich became one of the leaders of the Surikov literary and musical circle, edited and compiled collections of poems by I.Z. Surikov, I.S. Nikitin, A.V. Koltsov, S.D. Drozhzhin and others, he wrote articles about them.
Ivan Alekseevich edited and published "Nash Ziurnal" ("Our magazine") (1911) together with P.V. Muratov and the magazine "Put'" ("The Way") (1911-14), to which M. Gorky was involved, where he published his story "Tales of Italy" together with Bunin, E.N. Chirikov, K.S. Barantsevich, Drozhzhin, and others.
He was as well an editor, one of the translators and author of biographical articles of collections: "Yanka Kupala. Selected Poems by Russian Poets in translation" (Moscow,1919). He also translated works of R. Burns, P.J. Beranger, A. Negri and others.
