Ivan Egorovich graduated from the Saint Petersburg Drama School in 1852 (P.I. Grigoriev's class).
From 1853 to 1855 Ivan Egorovich perfomed in Vologda and Voronezh. A special success on the Voronezh stage was played by Chernyshev as a sailor of Bad Weather ("For the Faith, the Tsar and the Fatherland" by Pyotr Grigoriev). Since 1856, he was the actor of the Alexandrinsky Theater. Among the roles: Mitya, Rusakov ("Poverty is not a vice","Don't sit in your sleigh" by Alexander Ostrovsky), Hamlet in the play of the same name by William Shakespeare and others.
