Tormod Skagestad joined the Det Norske Teatret in 1953, working as director, and became manager of the theater in 1960. In his work, he took various dialects of Norway and created a unified language of the theater from them. He dramatized Sigrid Undset’s novel, Kristin Lavrandsdatter, and also produced plays by Eugene O'Neill, Garcia Lorca, and Jean Racine. He also produced Ibsen’s Peer Gynt.
Tormod Skagestad was a member of the Norwegian Theatre Leader Association (Norsk Teaterlederforening) and president of the Association of Norwegian Theatres (De Norske Teatres forening).
Tormod Skagestad was married to painter and artist Karin Skagestad. They had two children - Tove Skagestad and Bjørn Skagestad.
