In 1828 Ivan Ivanovich became a monk. He was a supervisor of Pereyaslavsky Spiritual School (1828-1829), inspector of Moscow Theological Academy (1829-1834), rector of Moscow Theological Seminary (1834-1842), at the same time a professor of philosophy. He was an Abbot of Zaikonospassky monastery in Moscow (1836-1842), Bishop Dmitrovsky, Vicar of Moscow Diocese (1842-1849). He helped Metropolitan Philaret (Drozdov) to administer the diocese.
