Between 1977 and 1981, Gamble studied at the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1987, he entered the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a Master of Business Administration degree in 1989.
In 1981, Gamble began his career as a manager and consultant at Price Waterhouse Management Consultants, a post he held till 1987. Between 1989 and 1991, he acted as an associate at McKinsey & Company's New York office. From 1991 till 1995, J. S. worked at GTE Wireless.
In December 1995, Gamble was appointed Area Vice President (Baltimore Metro Area) at Comcast, a post he continued to hold till July 1999, when he was promoted to the post of Region Senior Vice President in charge of Washington Metro/Virginia Region at the same company. In March 2006, he left the position. In April 2006, Gamble was made Senior Vice President in charge of Wireless Operations at Comcast, a post he continued to hold until December 2008.
Since April 2009, Gamble has been holding a post of an Advisory Board Member at eClerx. In August 2010, J. S. co-founded and became Managing Principal at Blu Venture Investors, a post he currently holds. Since June 2011, he has been an Investment Advisory Board Member at the Center for Innovative Technology GAP Funds in Herndon, Virginia. In January 2012, J. S. was appointed an Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship at Georgetown University McDonough School of Business in Washington, D.C., where he still works.
