He graduated from the University of Washington, Seattle with a Bachelor of Arts in 1984. Then Nielson received from McGill University his Master of Arts in 1986 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1991.
Nielson began his career as a lecturer in English at McGill University, Montreal, Quebec from 1989 until 1992. Then he lectured at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver from 1992 to 1995. Besides, he was a translator at the University of Michigan Press in 1994-1995 and was a proofreader at Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery in 1995.
