James Kettlewell, a Saratoga Springs resident for three decades and professor of art history at Skidmore College, contends that architecture and history are intricately related. On the theory that Saratoga Springs is a good model for American architecture since 1800, Kettlewell has studied its surviving buildings, presenting distinctly analytical profiles of nearly one hundred of its best. Punctuated with summary discussions of the historical forces, the btoad artistic and architectural currents, and the local events that affected each style, this book is as contextual as any community history we have seen, and more so than any comparable architectural survey, save perhaps Steve Jacobs's extraordinary work on Wayne County, New York.
