Jami J. Shah was born on July 11, 1950, in the United States, into the family of Maqsood and Nasim Shah.

In 1973 Jami received Bachelor of Science at N.E.D. Engineering College. Then he got Master of Science at the University of Pittsburg in 1976, and finally earned his Doctor of Philosophy at Ohio State University in 1984.
Prior to his academic career Jami worked in industry for six years, designing mechanical equipment and chemical machinery. His research areas include: structural design, design theory, design education, design Informatics, CMM metrology and precision engineering. After thirty years on the faculty at Arizona State and Director of Design Automation Lab, Jami J. Shah returned to his alma mater in 2015, the Ohio State University, as Honda Chair in Engineering Design. In his new position, he is establishing a new research lab in Digital Design & Manufacturing and a graduate program in Product Design Engineering.
Moreover, Jami is the co-author of two US patents, two books, and more then 250 peer reviewed technical papers in professional journals and conferences. He is the founding chief editor of ASME Transaction, the Journal of Computing & Information Science in Engineering of which he was Chief Editor from 2001 to 2010. He is currently the Area Editor of Research in Engineering Design and Co-Chief Editor of Journal of Computational Design & Engineering.
