Career
He is the author of Ecological Economics: Energy, Environment and Society (1990). Martinez Alier has been a researcher a Saint Anthony"s College Oxford (1966-1973 and 1984-1985), visiting professor at the State University of Campinas (Brasil) in 1974, the Free University of Berlin (1980-1981), Stanford University and the University of California, Davis, (1988-1989), Yale University (1999-2001), and FLACSO Sede-Ecuador (1994-1995 and 2007-2015). He is a founding member and past-president of the International Society for Ecological Economics.
He was a member (2000-2008) of the European Environment Agency Scientific Committee.
He is also co-editor of Getting down to earth: practical applications of Ecological Economics (1996), Rethinking Environmental History. World-System History and Global Environmental Change (2007), Recent Developments in Ecological Economics (2008), and of the series Ecological Economics and Human Well-Being with Oxford United Presbyterian, Delhi.
In late seventies Martinez Alier became interested in the agricultural energetics work of Sergei Podolinsky (1850-1891), publishing a text on this with J.M. Naredo in 1980.
