John William Carnell earned a bachelor degree from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque (1974) and an master degree from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia (1976).
John Carnell cites as the most notable influences on his work Steve Foster, John Gould, Thomas Barrow and William Larson. Since 1976 he has been a photography instructor at both the Philadelphia College of Art and the Community College of Philadelphia.
