John Curtain was born in 1939 in Australia.
Book publisher and educator John Curtain devoted much of his life to developing book culture in his native country, Australia. Until his death from cancer in 1999 he was also the editor of Publishing Studies, a twice-yearly journal devoted to the subject of book publishing in Australia. He worked as an educational and nonfiction publisher for Longman Cheshire and for Penguin Books. (Publishing runs in the family - Curtain’s wife and daughter also work in publishing.)
For the last ten years of his life Curtain was the coordinator of the Graduate Diploma in Editing and Publishing program for the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. As a member of the editorial committee for the History of the Book in Australia (HOBA) Project, Curtain was part of a team preparing a complete history of print culture in Australia. The history is projected to fill three volumes - From Origins to 1890, 1890 to 1945, and 1946 to Present - and Curtain’s contributions fell mainly to the third volume.
John Curtain was married to Eleanor Curtain. They had one daughter together.
