John was born October 26, 1963, in Denver, Colorado, United States; son of Christopher (a teacher) and Phyllis Angeline (Jozuik) Gist.
John studied at the University of Wyoming and received a Bachelor of Arts in 1992.
John studied at the University of Alaska and finished it with a Master of Fine Arts in 1996.

John Gist began to work at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks in a position of English teacher. He worked there for four years. In 1996 he became the editor-in-chief at Andmar Press in Mills and has worked till present time.
John Gist told CA: “I write best in the mornings before the mundane tendencies of the day have had a chance to cement into my consciousness. Most importantly, I attempt to write at least five days per week; this process keeps the project simmering in my subconscious."
He listed Nietzsche, Faulkner, Ouspensky, Beowulf, Tolkien, Castaneda, and Camus among his greatest influences.
John had a wife Wendy. They married in 1998.
