Jonathan Green received his Bachelor of Arts from Brandeis University in 1963, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. A Danforth Fellow, he earned a Master of Arts in 1967 from Harvard University. As an undergraduate he also studied at MIT and Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Jonathan Green was an associate professor of photography at Ohio State University in Columbus, where he has taught since 1976. Since 1977 he has also worked as editorial consultant and writer for Oxford University Press in New York City. Between 1968 and 1976 Jonathan Green worked at MIT, first as an instructor, then assistant professor, and then as associate professor and director of the Creative Photography Laboratory. As an editorial consultant and associate editor he was at Aperture from 1972 to 1976.
