Julius von Bernuth was a German general who served during World World War World War II

Background

Julius Hans Camillo Friedrich Leo Ludwig von Bernuth was born in Metz, Alsace-Lorraine, on 12 August 1897.

Career

Julius von Bernuth joined a cadet school in Karlsruhe. During the First World War, von Bernuth fought as a Lieutenant in the 115th Leibgarde-Infanterie-Regiment of the 49th Infanterie-Brigade of the Ducal Hessian Division. After the war, von Bernuth continued to serve with the Reichswehr in a variety of staff roles and was promoted to Major, in January 1936.

Now serving with the Wehrmacht, von Bernuth was promoted to Lieutenant colonel (Oberstleutnant), and by 1939, had risen to the role of Chief of the General Staff of the XV. Armee-Korps.

He was promoted to Colonel in December 1940 and Brigadier General (Generalmajor) on April 1942. On 12 July 1942, while flying in a Fiesler Storch from Army headquarters to XXXX Army Corps headquarters, his aircraft disappeared.

Searchers found his remains in the wreckage of the plane near Ssochkranaja, on 14 July 1942. He was buried July 16 1942 in the Frolowskij cemetery near Stalingrad.
