Jung-Hee Spetter’s picture-book illustrations combine humor with bright hues and a painterly aspect. Her paintings for Just a Minute!, the tale of a mother pig who is too busy to notice the mess her piglet is making, are a high point of the book. A brisk text and weightless quality of the illustrations make this tale a disarming mess of fun. So too, in Piggy’s Birthday Dream, about a shy pig whose friends plan a birthday surprise, Spetter’s bright pastel illustrations are quietly comic with a lighthearted tone.
For the pre-school audience, Spetter created a quartet of books about a young girl, Lily, and her spotted dog, Trooper, that are arranged around seasonal themes. In spring the duo goes on a picnic and has plans ruined by pesky farm animals. In summer they go to a beach, play ball, and pick a bouquet. In fall they discover the leaves and go for a walk in the rain. In winter they ski, skate, and cuddle in bed.
Her illustrations stand out because of the bright colors and simple shapes. In addition to illustrating, Jung-Hee Spetter is also involved in painting children's furniture and making paintings. In recent years she has participated in various exhibitions in Amsterdam, Utrecht, Apeldoorn and Amersfoort, among others.
Jung-Hee Spetter married Marco Dienaar, a diver, on November 20, 1995. They have one daughter - Fenna.
