It is said that while he was leading a punitive expedition to quell a revolt at Ezo (north Japan) he was ambushed by the enemy and decided to flee. His wife, however, a bold and courageous woman, stopped his flight by grouping together some 50 women servants and entering the melee with bow and arrows. Emboldened by this spirit of valor, Katana regrouped his men and began a counterattack and turned a defeat into a victory.
