Kaneto Okawa was born in 1908.
After Yasuhira died (1189), he became the chieftain of a group of other retainers. Under the feigned names of Yoshitsune Minamoto or Asahi-Kaja, son of Yoshinaka Kiso, he conquered areas in Dewa Province and pushed into provinces further north. In January, 1196, his forces clashed with Yoritomo Minamoto's and were defeated at Kurihara and Koromogawa. Kaneto escaped alone and sought refuge in the Kuriharadera Temple, where he was killed by local peasants.
