Lakhani earned his B.Eng in 1993, his Mississippi in 1999 and in 2006 his Doctor of Philosophy in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management and was advised by Eric von Hippel, Tom Allen, and Wanda Orlikowski.

He is the Principal Investigator of the Crowd Innovation Laboratory and National Aeronautics and Space Administration Tournament Laboratory at the Institute for Quantitative Social Science. His research and teaching focuses on open and user innovation. He edited the book Perspectives on Free and Open Source Software () published by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Press.
In addition to Open Source, Lakhani"s is cited as leading academic expert on the topic of crowdsourcing.
