Karl Jirgens was born on September 5, 1952, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Initially, Karl studied at the University of Toronto, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. Later, he attended Ontario College of Art (present-day Ontario College of Art and Design University). Then, Jirgens continued his education at York University, where he first received Master of Arts degree and later Doctor of Philosophy degree.
In 1979, Karl started to work as an editor-in-chief of Rampike magazine, a post he held till 2016. During the period from 1980 to 1981, Jirgens served as a managing editor of Open Letter periodical. In 1982, he was appointed an English Instructor at York University.
Also, he taught at Algoma University College (present-day Algoma University) in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. Moreover, from 2004 till 2009, Jirgens held the post of a head of the English Department at the University of Windsor.
During his lifetime, Jigens contributed his works to different periodicals, including Books in Canada, Canadian Literature, Impulse, Open Letter, Writing and others.
Currently, he serves as a Professor at the University of Windsor.
