She was born in 1864, in Aizu, Fukushima, Japan.
After graduating from Yokohama Ferris Girls High School she remained behind as a teacher in 1882. Shortly after she married Zenji Iwamoto, a well known Christian writer and editor, she began writing for his journal. She was one of the two best-known women writers of her time, the other being Kimiko Koganei. She translated several English classics into Japanese, including “Little Lord Fauntleroy” and “Remembrances.”
