Dillon attended St. Hilda’s College in Oxford in 1966. She then received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1967, as well as a Master of Science degree next year and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1976. Additionally, she had a postdoctoral study there from 1981 to 1983.
Dillon began to work at Western New England College (now University) at the position of a professor of psychology in 1968, next year she moved to Massachusetts Department of Mental Health and served as a psychiatric social worker there. She became a licensed psychologist in private clinical practice in 1981.
For four years from 1970, Dillon had held a position of an adjunct faculty member at Springfield College. In 1982, she was an adjunct faculty member at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Dillon is also a past member of accreditation teams of New England Accreditation Association.
Dillon published his book Living with Autism: The Parents' Stories in 1995. Her motive for writing the book grew out of author's frustration about not being able to locate an honest portrayal of what it is like to live with a child who has a serious mental disability, in this case, autism.
Dillon is now a contributor to journals, including Psychological Reports, Skeptical Inquirer, Journal of Genetic Psychology, Advocate, Laughing Matters, International Journal of Psychiatry in Medicine and Psychology Teacher Network.
