Katsumoto Katagiri was born in 1556.
Katsumoto Katagiri served Hideyoshi Toyotomi and distinguished himself so well at the Battle of Shizugatake (1583) and later during the Bunroku-no-eki (expedition to Korea, 1592) that he was rewarded with a fief of land equivalent to the production of 40,000 koku of rice (1596) and appointed a tutor to Hideyori, Hideyoshi's son. After the death of Hideyoshi and when trouble arose over the idol of Buddha at Hokoji Temple between Ieyasu and Hideyori (1614), he tried to settle the differences amicably but was misunderstood by both sides and, as a result, was banished to Ibaraki (Osaka Prefecture) together with his younger brother Sadataka. Later, beguiled by Ieyasu he joined his forces and attacked Hideyori Toyotomi at Osaka and completely destroyed his former master’s forces. Records show that Katagiri was so full of remorse for what he did that he committed suicide. Another record says that he died slowly of lingering sorrow at his misdeed.
