Kenji Osawa was born in Toyohashi City (Aichi Prefecture), Japan. He was adopted son of Genryu Osawa, physician of the ToyohashiClan (Aichi Prefecture), Japan.

He went to Germany in 1870 as one of the first students sent abroad by the government.
He was appointed professor of physiology at Tokyo University in 1882 and dean of its medical department in 1891. He was professor emeritus of Tokyo University. He represented Japan at the Fifth Universal Physiological Conference in Europe in 1901.
He was a member of the Imperial Academy and the House of Peers.
