Kumakawa Muneo was born in 1858. He was the son of a retainer of Itakura Clan (Fukushima Prefecture). In 1809, he was adopted by the famous physician Soetsu Kumakawa.

After graduating from Tokyo University (1883), Kumakawa Muneo was sent to Germany to study biochemics at Berlin University.
Returning home (1891), Kumakawa Muneo was appointed professor at his alma mater. He was Japan’s delegate to World Medical Conference held in Madrid (1903). Kumakawa Muneo was a member of Imperial Academy (1908) and Dean of the Medical Faculty of his alma mater (1917).
