In 1971 Lawrence received Bachelor of Arts at King’s College. He continued his studying at Pennsylvania State University, where he earned Master of Arts in 1973 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1981.
Lawrence spend the whole his career at the Texas A&M University, College Station, where he started as an assistant professor in 1984, and then became an associate professor of English. He holds that position till now. Since 1992 he is also an author and editor of books.
On August 26, 1973 he married Mary Jane Charles, with whom he gave birth to twins: Cory and Craig.
