Leo Marcello was born on August 6, 1945, in Deridder, Louisiana. He was the eldest of five children of Luke, a physician, and Bert DiGiglia Marcello.
Leo Marcello attended Tulane University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1967. He also graduated from Louisiana State University, where he received a Master of Arts in 1970 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1976. Besides, Leo Marcello carried out postdoctoral studies at the University of Dallas in philosophy in 1985-1986 and the Catholic University of America in theology in 1986-1988.
After graduation, Leo Marcello was a lecturer at the University of Maryland Overseas Program in 1976. In 1981 he started to work at the McNeese State University until 2000. There Marcello held the position of a visiting lecturer in 1981-1982, assistant professor in 1989-1992, associated professor in 1992-1999, a professor in 1998-2000, and a shearman Academic Professor in 1992-1993. He served as a lecturer in 1987-1988 and assistant professor in 1989 at the Catholic University of America, and instructor at Howard University in 1988-1989.
In addition to his educational career, Leo Marcello was a writer. He was a contributor of poems, short stories, and articles to numerous periodicals, including Alabama Literary Review, America, Arba Sicula, Black Buzzard Review, Burning Light, Cedar Rock, Christian Century, Commonweal, Context South, Delta, Distillery, Epos, Everyman, First Things, Forkroads, Greenfield Review, Image, Italian Americana, Journeymen, Louisiana English Journal, Louisiana Literature, Merrill Poetry Quarterly, Modern Liturgy, National Catholic Reporter, New Delta Review, Paterson Literary Review, Poetry NOW, Southern Review, Studia Mystica, Texas Observer, Tulane Literary Magazine, Visions International, Windless Orchard, and Xavier Review. Additionally, Marcello founded and served as a publisher of the Cramers Press.
Leo Marcello was well known as a writer and educator. He taught for more than twenty years. As a writer, Marcello became a holder of several awards and honors, including the Bennett Award for Poetry from the Deep South Writers Conference for his poem, Buying Cheese, in 1980, the David Lloyd Kreeger Award from the Catholic University of America for poetry manuscript, The Infinite Possibilities of Desire, in 1987, and the Louisiana Letters Award of Excellence from the Louisiana Life magazine for a short story in 1991. He also earned Shearman Foundation fellowships for Contending with Angels and Beasts in 1989-1990 and Blackrobe's Love Letters in 1990-1991 and was a holder of the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities grant and became the distinguished professor of the year citation of the McNeese State University, all in 1993. Moreover, Leo Marcello was a founder of the Cramers Press.
