Leonid was born on June 6, 1921, in Lovin, Dobryansky district, Chernigov region, Ukraine.
In 1948, after graduation from Kiev medical institute. In 1948, after graduation from Kiev medical institute, L.V. Tymoshenko was enrolled in clinical residency in obstetrics and gynecology (1948-1952). In 1956 he defended his thesis on "Hemolytic diseases of newborns", in 1965 - his doctoral thesis on the topic "Weakness of labor".
He worked as a junior research assistant (1952-1959), a senior research fellow (1959-1961) of the Kiev Research Institute for the Protection of Maternity and Childhood (now the Institute of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine).
From 1961 till 1964 L.V. Tymoshenko was an assistant professor of the Kiev Medical Institute. Later he worked as Head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department in the Lviv Medical Institute (1964-1971), Head of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department №1 of the Kiev State Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians (now the Kiev Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education named after P.L. Shupik) (1971-1995). From 1995 to 1999 he was a professor of the Military Surgery Department of the Military Medical Institute of the Military Medical Academy of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. Since 1996 L.V. Tymoshenko has been a professor-consultant of the Kyiv Regional Center for Maternal and Child Health, created on the basis of the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Perinatology of the Kiev Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education.

1985In 1974 L.V. Tymoshenko was nominated for a corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR in the specialty "Obstetrics and Gynecology" (now RAMS), in 1992 - Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences of National Progress. Since 1993 - Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. Honorary member of the Union of Journalists of Ukraine.
He was married and had two daughters.
