Leonid Nikolaevich graduated from the Voronezh gymnasium, and then, in 1865, he graduated the law faculty of St. Petersburg University. He repeatedly visited Voronezh. In his student years he was close to the club of Mikhail Fedorovich De-Poole. He published theatrical notes in the "Voronezh Provincial Gazette" in 1862.
Leonid Nikolaevich served under the Vilna governor-general, then - under the quartermaster administration. He was a State Councilor. Leonid Nikolaevich published articles on the Slavic issues. He helped Aleksei Sergeevich Suvorin on "the Russian Calendar" (until 1909), as well as on the newspaper "Novoye Vremya" and the magazine "Istorichesky Vestnik".
