The first works on neurology he began in 1953 in the student scientific club of the Novosibirsk Medical Institute. In 1959 he passed Doctor of Science, defense and got involved into electrophysiology of the nervous system.
In 1965 at the Rostov State University he defended his doctoral thesis, devoted to electrophysiology and histochemistry of the brain at low temperatures, on the materials of which he wrote the book "The brain of hibermating animals" (1970), republished in 1972 in the USA.
After graduation from the Institute with a diploma with honors and refusal from the administration in a postgraduate study and a clinical traineeship, he was sent as a doctor to Verkhnie Muli village of the Molotov region, where the prisoners were building the Molotovsky (now - Permian) oil refinery. The prisoners were assistants. Being the head of the neurological department of the city hospital №21, he organized a regional scientific medical society. There he began the studies of the brain under low temperatures, which he finished in Odessa, being the head of the department of the Psychoneurology Institute (1960-1965). Since 1965 the "Novosibirsk" period has resumed, continuing to this day. By competition he was elected to the bionics department of the Automation and Electrometry Institute of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, organized the inter-academic department of medical and biological cybernetics, which was reorganized into the Institute of Medical and Biological Cybernetics in 1992.
Now Marx Borisovich is the head of the biophysics and bioengineering department of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biophysics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, being the deputy director for scientific work. From 1966 till 1992 he analyzed the role of the brain-specific proteins in the activity of the nervous system, carried out neuro-cybernetic works.
In 1988 Marx Borisovich Shtark was elected as a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, and in 1998 - an academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. He is a full member of the Russian Academy of Medical and Technical Sciences (1985), a member of the American Association of Biological Management (1992).
