Benjamin specialized in studio art at the State University of New York in Albany, where he received a BA in 1971.
Since 1979 he has been an assistant professor in art, teaching photography at Union College in Schenectady, New York, and from 1972 to 1979 he lectured at the College of St. Rose in Albany.
In 1979 he joined the Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies. In both 1978 and 1979 he won first place in the faculty division of the Nikon/Nutshell College Photo Contest.
The artist worked in 35mm black-and-white and made 16 x 20 silver prints.
Since 1978 he has been a member of SPE, the Catskill Center for Photography, and Friends of Photography.
