In 1954 Artem Akopovich graduated from the medical faculty of the Yerevan State Medical Institute. From 1957 till 1960 Artem completed a postgraduate study on microbiology at the Research Institute of Experimental Medicine of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (Leningrad). He passed Doctor of Science defense in 1961, a doctoral thesis - in 1980.
Artem Akopovich Totolyan worked as the head of the bacteriology laboratory of Sanitary-Epidemiological Station in Armenia (1954-1957), was engaged in the diagnosis of intestinal infections, diphtheria, whooping cough, venereal diseases, brucellosis, bacteriological examination of food, water and employees of nutrition objects. Then he worked as a junior research scientist of microbiology department (1960-1964) of the Research Institute of Experimental Medicine of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (Leningrad) and then as a senior research advisor (1964-1972), deputy director for scientific work (1966-1988), head of the laboratory of microorganisms’ genetics (1972-1987), head of the department of molecular miology (1987-1989), head of the department of molecular microbiology (from 1990 till nowadays). Since 1984 Artem Akopovich Totolyan has been heading the WHO National Center on Streptococcus (on the basis of the laboratory of microorganisms’ genetics and the molecular microbiology department of the Research Institute of Electromechanics of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences).
In 1984 Artem Akopovich Totolyan was elected as a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, and in 1993 - a full member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. Professor by the specialty "microbiology" (1983). Honorable member of the Microbiological Society in Czech Republic and Slovakia (1995), WHO expert on streptococcus and streptococcal diseases (1984), member of the board presidium of the Microbiologists’ and Epidemiologists’ Society of the Russian Federation (1986), chairman and deputy chairman of the St. Petersburg Branch of the Microbiologists’ and Epidemiologists’ Society (1988-1999 ), organizer of the XII (St. Petersburg, 1993) and president of the XIII (Paris, 1996) international Symposia on streptococcus and streptococcal diseases, member of the editorial board of the journals "Folia veterinaria" (since 2000), "Journal of microbiology, epidemiology and immunobiology" (since 1983), "Molecular genetics, microbiology, virology" (1986-1995).
