Karl Hecht received medical education at the Medical Faculty of the Humboldt University in Berlin (1955), specializing in physiology, psychophysiology.
Karl Hecht worked as an assistant at the Institute of Physiology of the Humboldt University (1955-1957) firstly as the head of the department, then as the deputy director of the Central Institute of Heart and Circulation Research Academy of Sciences of the GDR (1957-1977), then - director of the Institute of Pathophysiology of the Humboldt University (1977-1991). Since 1995, Karl Hecht is the director of science at the Institute for Stress Studies, Academician of the International Academy of Sciences, Academician of the International Academy of Astronautics.
Karl Hecht is a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Honorary member of the Purkinje Society (Czech Republic) and the physiological society of Cuba.
