Mary E. Hazard was born in Detroit, Michigan.
In 1950, Hazard received a Bachelor of Arts from Siena Heights College. In 1954, she also received a Master of Arts from Western Reserve (now Case Western Reserve) University, and a Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College in 1970.
Mary E. Hazard started her career as an instructor in English at the University of Hawaii. Later, she was an instructor in English at Temple University.
Hazard also was an assistant professor, then an associate professor, and finally a professor of English at Drexel University. Currently, Mary is a professor emerita there. She also was a guest lecturer at the University of Stockholm and Bar-Ilan University, both in 1998, as well as at the University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, Moore College of Art, and University of Delaware.

2000On December 29, 1950, Mary married Patrick D. Hazard, but they divorced in 1970. The couple has three children - Michael, Catherine and Timothy.
