(One day at school Peter paints a picture of a big orange ...)
One day at school Peter paints a picture of a big orange flower. It's the best picture he's ever painted. Proudly (and very carefully) he carries it home, showing it to everyone he meets along the way. Everyone agrees that it is a wonderful picture, but they all go a bit overboard with their praise and come up with some silly suggestions for what to do with the picture. By the time Peter gets home, he is convinced that no one really understands and appreciates his work of art. But Peter is in for a surprise, for his proud parents know just what to do with Peter's picture.

Valeri Gorbachev was born on June 10, 1944, in Kiev, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, now Ukraine to the family of Grigori Gorbachev and Polina Koishman.
When Gorbachev was 14 years old he had to choose his future occupation. His father wanted him to study math but Gorbachev wanted to draw so he enrolled specialized art school. When he finished it he was admitted to the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine.
Even before Gorbachev graduated from the academy, he started to work as a freelancer for the cartoon magazine Perets. After graduation, he went to work as a cartoonist for full time. In 1979 he unsuccessfully tried to leave USSR and immigrate to the United States. As a result, he was fired from “Perets" and was unable to find work as an artist for a long time as all jobs in USSR was controlled by the government. For some periods of time, he also worked for such famous Soviet Magazines as Vesiolyje Kartinki and Murzilka.
So he spent a few years just doing oil paintings in his studio. And slow as time has passed by he realized that he did not want to go back to do cartoons anymore and what he really wanted was to write and to draw children books. He ended up making over 40 published books in USSR before he finally immigrated to the United States after the collapse of USSR in 1991. Since then he has created over 50 children books and hopes to make just as many more in the future. Gorbachev is also a contributor to children's magazines, including Highlights for Children, Highlights High Five, and Ladybug.

2006Having lived in both Ukraine and the United States, Gorbachev has been influenced by both Russian and American art and culture, and he intends for his characters to show the similarities between people all over the world.
Quotations: "The most reoccurring themes in my books are of friendship, love and relationship between parents and children. I would not say that I have characters to which I return every time more like a style in which I draw them. I like to draw pigs, bears and rabbits so often I make them my main characters. There have been few different books that my publishers asked me to make into series. I also have been doing a series of stories with the same group of characters for different children magazines for many years. But whenever, in my head, I start with ideas for a new book I want it to be original and completely different from the book before it."
Valeri Gorbachev married a librarian named Victoria in October 1970. They have two children: Konstantin and Shoshana Alexandra.
