In this personal photo album, Michelle Kwan takes you behind the scenes, both on and off the ice, revealing the answers to the questions she is asked most.
Michelle Kwan is a former American single figure skater. Combining artistry and elegance with athleticism, she took a couple of Olympic medals, silver and bronze, won five World titles and had nine victories at the United States Figure Skating Championships, among other trophies from national and international sports events, what made her one of the most decorated athletes in the United States history of single figure skating.
Background
Ethnicity:
Kwan's parents immigrated to the United States from China in the early 1970s. Her father came from Guangzhou.
Michelle Wingshan Kwan was born on July 7, 1980 in Torrance, California, United States. She is a daughter of Danny Kwan and Estella Kwan. Michelle has an elder sister Karen, who also practiced figure skating, and elder brother Ron.
Education
Michelle Kwan, born into a family of the Golden Pheasant restaurant owner and a television news anchor, practiced gymnastics at first. Watching her elder brother Ron playing ice hockey, Michelle's elder sister Karen asked parents for skating lessons. Michelle followed and both sisters began taking lessons, in about 1985, at a shopping mall in Rancho Palos Verdes, where the family lived.
By the time when Michelle won some local competitions, she watched on TV how an American skater Brian Boitano took the gold medal at the Winter Olympic Games. A dream of becoming an Olympic Champion one day sparked inside of Kwan at that moment. In 1988, Kwan and her sister began taking private lessons with coach Derek James.
The Kwans struggled financially to pay for the lessons, skates, and clothes required for both sisters. They even had to sell their home in Rancho Palos Verdes and move into a house in Torrance, California, owned by Michelle's paternal grandparents. The situation improved in 1991 after Kwan had finished first in the United States Figure Skating Association's (USFSA) Southwest Pacific Junior Championship and a took a bronze medal the next year in the Pacific Coast Junior Championship. The victories provided herself and her sister Kwan with a scholarship to the Ice Castle International Training Center, an prestigious training facility in Lake Arrowhead, California.
While in the Center, the Kwan sisters came across a coach Frank Carroll who started to train them in 1992. Carroll prepared Michelle, a regional and sectional medalist at the junior level by the time, to her first United States Figure Skating Junior Championships. The debut turned to be below expectations as the budding figure skater placed only ninth. Though, Michelle kept her strong determination to advance to the top level.
Before becoming homeschooled since the 8th grade, Michelle Kwan attended Soleado Elementary School in Palos Verdes, California. In 1998, she finished Rim of the World High School, Lake Arrowhead, and pursued her studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, for one year.
In 2006, she transferred to the University of Denver, Colorado. A year later, Kwan obtained a bachelor's degree in international studies and a minor in political science from Denver's Josef Korbel School of International Studies. From 2009 to 2011, she did graduate studies in international relations at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. She also has an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Southern Vermont College.
The start of Michelle Kwan's career can be counted from 1993 when, secretely from her then coach Frank Carroll, she took the United States Figure Skating Association test dvance to the senior ranks. She passed the test and debuted at the United States Championships as a senior. Her performance was good enough to land her in sixth place. She improved her result at that same year's United States Olympic Festival, where she finished first. Still relatively unknown skater, Kwan began earning predictions of future greatness based on her jumping ability.
1994 brought an unprecedented level of attention to women's figure skating. Nancy Kerrigan, one of the most likely candidates to make the United States Olympic team, was attacked in a plot coordinated by rival skater Tonya Harding's husband, Jeff Gillooly. In the absence of Kerrigan who was obliged to miss the US Championships because of the injury, Harding won the competition, and Kwan managed to finish second. Though Kwan joined the national Olympic team as an alternate, the investigation around the attack made her a featured attraction of the media that covered the Lillehammer Games. She wasn't given a chance to compete, but enjoyed the small taste of her Olympic dream. A few months later Kwan placed eighth in her first World Championship.
The next year, Kwan won the silver medal at the United States nationals but didn't manage to grab the World title despite of flawlessly performed programs. Realizing that judges and others perceived her still as a "kid skater," she decided to mature her style and improve the artistry of her skating.
Kwan's breakthrough occured at the 1996 World Championships. With a program on the music from Salome, Richard Strauss's musical drama based on the New Testament story in which Salome performed the dance of the seven veils to earn the head of John the Baptist on a platter, Kwan earned the gold medal of the competition, becoming at the time the youngest skater of the United States to do so.
Kwan's performance at the United States 1997 nationals failed as she fell three times. At the World Championship, she stumbled during her short program. She worked on her mistakes by the time of a long program performance and finished second, after her main rival, Tara Lipinski. At the Olympics in Nagano, Japan, she skated well but, having been hampered by a stress fracture in her left foot, couldn't surpass fifteen-years-old Lipinski, and took again the silver medal. Kwan rematched winning the World Championship two months later, in the absence of Lipinski, who had turned professional.
At the next World Championship in Helsinki, Finland, mistakes placed the favored Kwan second to the gold medal winner Maria Butyrskaya of Russia. She pushed ahead, earning titles at both the National and World hampionships in 2000 and proved them a year later. Searcing for freshness in her performances, Kwan changed her long-time choreographer Lori Nichol before the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.
With the long program at the 2002 United States Nationals to Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "Sheherazade," she came to the Olympiad once again as the favorite. Unfortunately, her hope for a gold medal was ruined by a fall on a triple flip jump midway through her program. Following the mistake, Kwan took only the bronze medal, surpassed by gold medalist Irina Slutskaya of Russia and silver medalist, her teammate Sarah Hughes.
After the Olympics, Michelle Kwan gained a lucrative contract with the Disney Corporation as a spokesperson and performer. She devoted her time between the seasons to fulfilling her endorsement contracts and to her personal life. She entered the 2002-2003 season as a six-time National Champion, four-time World Champion, and two-time Olympic medalist. At the 2003 United States National Championship in Dallas, Texas, Kwan took a gold medal, her seventh at the nationals, and grabbed her fifth World championship that same year.
Kwan then added two more national titles to her collection of accolades coming closer to a record set by Maribel Vinson in 1937. Later in 2005, she finished out of the podium at the World Championships, for the first time since 1995. The event would ultimately be the last of her competitive career.
Qualified for the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, Kwan was obliged to withdraw after an injury which she had received during her first practice at the Games. She missed the 2007 and 2008 seasons because of her university studies. Having a degree in international relations, she then served as an American Public Diplomacy Envoy at the United States department for about three years. After several exhibition performances, including Ice All Stars and Yuna Kim's All That Skate show, Michelle Kwan pursued her service at the department, where she was a senior adviser, among other duties.
In 2014, Kwan covered the events of the Sochi Winter Olympics as a commentator of Fox Sports 1 channel. Kwan has also appeared on the screen, including the episodes of The Simpsons, the Family Guy, Ice Princess 2010 movie, and such TV series as Arthur, Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, and others. She voiced a shopkeeper in Disney's sequel of Mulan.
Michelle Kwan went down in the history of figure skating as one of its most award-winning representatives. Her grace on and off the ice always provided her with the respect and admire from the side of the audience.
Claiming her first United States and World Championship titles at the age of fifteen, Kwan reigned as United States Champion from 1998 to 2002. She picked up gold medals at the World Championships in 1998, 2000, and 2001. There are two Olympic medals in her collection, the silver of Nagano and the bronze of the Salt Lake City. Her nine U.S. titles are tied to Maribel Vinson's record.
Embodying the ideals not just of figure skating but of athleticism and good sportsmanship in general, Kwan was honored with the James E. Sullivan Award as Outstanding Amateur Athlete by the Amateur Athletic Union in 2002.
A fourteen-times United States Olympic Committee Athlete of the Month (the record for male or female skaters), she was named the Sportswoman of the Year by the United States Olympic Committee in 2003. Quotations:
"Sports provides that tool kit to be successful in life. Because it's not always going to be smooth sailing."
"In figure skating, you have four minutes to do your best. It's your time; you do your best."
"The biggest lessons I learned were probably the times where I had the biggest setbacks and the biggest challenges – when I had the biggest jumps forward and lessons learned."
"Even at a young age, when you start to do well, it's tough because it's lonely on top, and I wasn't the most popular."
"You see figure skaters fall all the time. It's the way you pick yourself back up and keep going."
"To be the best, you need to be the most well-trained and well-prepared athlete you can be. The pressure is going to be all around you. You just have to make sure that your body and mind is fine-tuned. Then you go out there and do it."
"To represent your country is an honor and a great experience."
"Looking back, I feel very fortunate to have had such a long career. Many skaters end their careers in their early 20s. I had the opportunity to go to two Olympic Games – almost three after being the alternate in 1994 and then in 2006 being injured."
"A few years after I finished skating, someone asked where my medals were. I'm like, 'In a suitcase somewhere.' Now they're nicely displayed in an ice rink, but medals don't really mean that much. It's the experience, the story of the skating, the love."
"What I love the most is getting on the ice and just popping in a fabulous CD and skating – all by myself, the rink completely empty, just me and the music."
"When I was younger, I always dreamed of being a legend, to be remembered in figure skating."
"Whatever you're fighting for, you go with full passion and love."
