He graduated from the Central Technical School of Theater Arts (1927).
In 1923-1925 he worked in a film studio of Lev Vladimirovich Kuleshov. He made his debut with the film "Chadra" (1927). In 1927-1934 he worked at the studios "Belgoskino" and "Sovkino" (Leningrad). Together with Mark Semyonovich Donskoy he did films "In the Big City" (1928) and "The Price of a Man" (1929).
Director of films: "The Underground Sun" (1930), "Honor" (1932) and others. Since 1952 he worked in the sphere of documentary films: "The Tale of the Land of Yakutsk" (1958), "Great Foresight" (1961), "With You, Russia!" (1965), "Yuri Tolubeev" (1966), "Kaluga is the Cradle of Cosmonautics" (1970), “Meetings in Academgorodok” (1973) and others. In the films of Averbakh Klavdia Ivanovna Shulzhenko, Alexander Davidovich Beniaminov and many others made their debut.
