Jackson established a career writing novels, novellas, and short stories while raising her daughter and working as a registered nurse and nurse manager in Topeka, St. Louis and San Francisco, California. Her characters are often very much like their creator: proud, black, self-confident, plus-size women who have their lives under control.
Monica wrote “Midnight Blue” that was published in 1997, “Love's Celebration” and “Heart's Desire” in 1998, “A Magical Moment” 1999, “Never Too Late for Love” and “The Look of Love” in 2000, “Too Hot to Handle” in 2001, “In My Dreams” in 2004, “Love's Potion” and Mr. Right Now” in 2005, “Perfect Passion” in 2006, “Merry Christmas” in 2007.
With Leslie Esdaile, Gwynne Forster, Carmen Green and Donna Hill, she wrote “Midnight Clear” in 2000, “Gettin' Merry” in 2002 with Geri Guillaume, Beverly Jenkins and Francis Ray, “The Sistahood of Shopaholics” in 2003 with Leslie Esdaile, Reon Laudat and Níqui Stanhope, “Takin' Chances for the Holidays” in 2006 with Adrianne Byrd and Donna Hill, “Creepin'” in 2007 with L A Banks, Donna Hill, J M Jeffries and Janice Sims, “Midnight Clear, Too” in 2009 with Gwynne Forster.

Monica Jackson won awards for her work and was nominated for Romantic Times Career Achievement Award and for the Black Alliance's Golden Pen Award. She also won the Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice award, Romance in Color's Award of Excellence Award, Romantic Times Top Pick (6 times), Romantic Times Gold Medal 4 1/2 star rating (2 times), Romantic Times 4 1/2 star rating (5 times), and Romance in Color's Reviewer's Choice Award.
Jackson appeared in several radio and television appearances and gave workshop presentations. She did television spots and also has been featured in a People magazine article, unrelated to her writing. Monica’s “Midnight Blue” was adapted for television by Black Entertainment Television in 2000.
