Murray Riss was born on February, 1940, in Holand, Nord-Trondelag, Norway.
Murray Riss received a Bachelor of Arts in 1963 from City College of the City University of New York. He studied at Cooper Union School of Art in New York City from 1963 to 1966 and took his Master of Fine Arts at Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, in 1968.
A professor at the Memphis Academy of Arts (Tennessee), Murray Riss has headed its Department of Photography since 1968. He has also been a visiting lecturer in photography and film at South-western University at Memphis since 1971.
