Takayama Nagafusa was born in Settsu (Hyogo Prefecture).
Distinguished himself as a warrior when he fought fo r Murashige Araki against Nobunaga Oda. Later became a general in his erstwhile enemy's army.
At the outbreak of the Honnoji Revolt (1582), in which Nobunaga was killed by Mitsuhide Akechi, he led the army of Hideyoshi Hashiba (Toyotomi) and defeated Mitsuhide at Yamazaki, near Kyoto. Later he himself was defeated by Morimasa Sakuma, a general of Katsuie Shibata. For this he was expelled by Hideyoshi and he sought refuge with Toshiie Maeda, the Lord of Kaga.
As he was a devoted Christian, the Shogunate exiled him to Manila, where he died.
