Natsume Soseki was born in 1867, Tokyo, Japan.
Graduated from the English Literature Section, Tokyo University (1898). Taught English at the Tokyo Higher Normal School, Matsuyama Middle School and the Fifth Higher School in Kumamoto. Studied in London.
He was also a distinguished composer of 17-syllable odes and Chinese poems. His works are characterized by a fine psychological analysis of human actions and humor. He had many disciples who became famous.
Was appointed instructor at Tokyo University and the First Higher School.
Died in 1916 of a protracted stomach disease.
