Natsura Kamiyama was born in Iioka (Chiba Prefecture) to a family of farmers.
Natsura Kamiyama developed a propensity for waka poetry, and in between working in the fields wrote poetry. He eventually developed a style of his own. An anthology of his poems has been collected in a book titled "Kokeshimizu" (moth and limpid water).
