Suetomo Sanjonishi was born in 1811. He was a son of Sanetsugu Ogimachi-Sanjo.
Suetomo Sanjonishi was one of the seven Court nobles who fled to Western Japan because of Shogunate pressure on anti-Shogunate elements in 1863. He stayed in Dazaifu, Kyushu, for seven years before he returned to the Kyoto Court.
He was appointed Poetry Commissioner of the Court (1869) and selected themes for the annual New Year Court poetry contests from 1874. Also acted as a judge at the contests.
