Nikita Dmitrievich graduated from school and automotive College, and then worked as a mechanic.He finished the courses at the Naval Aviation School in 1938 and branch service school in 1948.
In 1937 Kotov was called up to serve in the Workers 'and peasants' Red Army. Then became the flag-navigator of the 1st Mine-Torpedo Aviation Regiment (Baltic Fleet Air Force). Since 1956 was a Lieutenant Colonel reserved officer. In 1956 with the rank of Colonel Kotov was discharged. He lived in the city of Pushkin (now part of Saint Petersburg).
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the USSR on July 22, 1944 for "exemplary performance of tasks of command, courage and heroism in the battles with the German invaders" Nikita Kotov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the order of Lenin and the gold Star medal at number 4016.
